Johnson unveils deep clean details

Health Secretary Alan Johnson has announced further details of the hospital deep clean programme which is aimed at tackling MRSA and Clostridium difficile.

Mr Johnson said the flagship project is a key part of the Government’s strategy to improve the cleanliness of hospitals.

And he added that the initiative will begin this winter and is expected to be completed by March.

In a written statement to MPs, Mr Johnson set out the funding levels available to each Strategic Health Authority in England – a total of £57.5m.

Mr Johnson said: “Undertaking a deep clean is a key part of our strategy to improve cleanliness and ensure patients have confidence that their hospitals are safe.

“The Strategic Health Authorities have now allocated funding so that hospitals can get on with the deep clean programme this winter with the aim of completing all deep cleans by the end of March 2008.

“People want an NHS that is clean and safe. The deep clean programme will help to reassure patients and build public confidence in the NHS.”
