Executives from the global pharmaceutical and biotech industries have been honoured at an awards ceremony.
John Davis, the managing editor of Scrip World Pharmaceutical News, opened the proceedings by highlighting progress made by drug firms in the past 12 months.
He welcomed the introduction of new products for AIDS/HIV, high blood pressure, and breast and renal cancer.
Mr Davis also hailed the industry for playing its part in the public health arena, by helping to plan for a possible flu pandemic, developing medicines for rare and orphan diseases, and stepping up efforts to treat neglected diseases in developing countries.
The event was also addressed Lord Digby Jones of Birmingham, the UK trade and investment minister.
He saluted the achievements of the pharmaceutical industry in the UK, as despite representing just 1% of the global population, the UK produces 5% of the world’s science, and pharmaceutical exports from the UK amount to £14bn.
Schering-Plough won 13 Scrip Awards including Management Team of the Year, and Pharma Company of the year (Large), while CEO Fred Hassan scooped Executive of the Year.
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals also claimed two awards for Best Overall Pipeline, while its mTOR inhibitor Torisel (temsirolimus) won Best New Drug.
