The NHS could save hundreds of millions of pounds if it follows the advice of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
For example, he said, using ACE inhibitors to reduce heart attacks and alitretinoin for severe chronic eczema would save £3 million by cutting demand for dermatological services.
He said that 150 annual clinical guidelines and technology appraisals would save £600 million if implemented across England, although in some areas the savings will already have been made.
Speaking at the NHS medical directors’ conference, he said: “We have published a comprehensive catalogue of all the advice the NICE has given that prevents opportunities to make “disinvestment decisions” in the NHS.
“We are working with NHS chief executive David Nicholson and others on finding ways of supporting you in making the savings you need to make.”
