Pharmacists at Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière have developed an iPhone application dedicated to healthcare professionals and the general public on Pregnancy and Drugs.
Many drugs are able to cross the placenta and reach the fetus, to which they may be toxic. The same phenomenon occurs in breast-feeding women, some drugs being able to reach their milk.
The iPhone application (other platforms of which are currently being developed) provides information on whether a woman may take a drug during her pregnancy or while she breast-feeds her baby.
If there is a risk, it is advised that she should contact her physician or pharmacist to take a personal advice. Such advice is based on data taken from international scientific literature.
The information is provided both in English and French, within the same app, on the same screens for more comfort.
Dr. Vincent Launay-Vacher, who has developed the app, has announced that it will be free on the App Store until 7th.
