Appointment of Mark Borthwick to chair of UKCPA

The United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association (UKCPA) is delighted to announce that Mark Borthwick, Consultant Pharmacist Critical Care, John Radcliffe Hospital has been elected its new Chair.
  • In 2000 Mark took up the role he is probably best known for now at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital
  • In 2002 he started the ICU journal club in Nov 2002 (10 years old this month).
  • Mark is also part of the Expert Group from its foundation (Adult Critical Care: Specialist Pharmacy Practice published by DH in 2005).
  • In 2003 Mark led on Delirium guidelines which became an ICS (Intensive Care Society) standard in 2006, changing practice in ICU’s across the UK.
  • Mark was designated as a Consultant Pharmacist in 2007 and in the same year commenced the credentialing work which is now a process that has been run several times and was part of the group which was shortlisted for the RPS leadership award 2011.
  • Mark was key in the first survey around medication concentration standardisation, published in 2007, the second survey published in 2009 and standards adopted by Intensive Care Society in 2010.
  • Mark has been Chair of Critical Care Group from 2008-2011 and, along with a team of highly acclaimed ITU pharmacists, produced the National Critical Care Flu treatment guideline which won RPS Clinical Pharmacist of the year award in 2011.
Outside of work, Mark is married to Claire, who is an oncology pharmacist and has four children, 15, 11, 9 and 5. Mark has a great love of skiing which he has done since he was 13, and not many people know that he can do Copperplate and Spencerian calligraphy.
Dr Chris Green, outgoing Chair, says, “I have no doubt that Mark is a man of vision, drive and integrity and that the UKCPA is in safe hands. I wish Mark every success as UKCPA Chair and I’m sure you will join me in supporting him throughout his term of office.”
Mark says, “The UKCPA has been prominent in my professional development since the moment I stepped into hospital pharmacy, so I am very excited at the opportunity to be involved in this organisation in such an influential role. I am very much looking forward to working with such a great crowd of talented people”.
