Hospital Pharmacy Europe is delighted to launch its new series of free-to-attend Virtual Study Days, starting with a focus on intravenous (IV) medicines safety on 25 June 2025.
Around 12,000 deaths occur in the UK annually as a result of IV medication errors and complications. Being technically complex to prepare and administer, and associated with a high potential for harm, these medicines are becoming increasingly intricate, and it is vital for today’s pharmacists to stay updated on the latest developments in infusion practice.
That’s where this virtual study day comes in – and you can register for free now. The agenda has been specifically designed to highlight risks and reduce avoidable preparation and administration errors associated with IV medicines, with insights and essential updates from a range of experts in the field.
You’ll be able to secure all-important planned CPD learning activities to support your revalidation, put your burning questions to our speakers and catch up on-demand with recordings available to access and share with colleagues shortly after the event.
IV medicines safety Virtual Study Day agenda
Chaired by Reena Mehta, consultant pharmacist in critical care at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and chair of the Intensive Care Society’s Learning Division, the virtual study day will cover everything you need to know about IV medicines safety.
The day’s agenda will kick off with an overview of IV fluid essentials from critical care pharmacist Alan Timmins of Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, NHS Fife. He’ll also return later in the day to discuss licensed ready-to-use and ready-to-administer IV products, asking the question: ‘Can we put a price on safety?’
Philip Barclay, consultant anaesthetist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and co-chair of the Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group joins the line up to share his take on where we are and what we can do to manage patient safety risks with the transition to NRFit.
Then, attention will turn to the complications of IV therapy in a session covering CLABSI, thrombophlebitis and extravasation updates from Andrew Barton, nurse consultant in IV therapy and vascular access at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust and chair of the National Infusion and Vascular Access Society.
The day will conclude with a session from Adam Sutherland, associate professor in healthcare quality and safety at the University of Bradford School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, in which he’ll discuss innovation and improvement initiatives in IV safety, including opportunities for collaboration.
