FDA approves bipolar drug Seroquel

Drug giant AstraZeneca’s bipolar disorder treatment Seroquel – which is used alongside antidepressants to combat major depressive disorders (MDD) – has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

A large amount of MDD sufferers do not respond well enough to treatment from antidepressants, say Astra – which is where Seroquel can help doctors follow a different course of action.

The FDA has written to Astra requesting additional information on treating MDD solely using Seroquel.

News of Seroquel’s approval comes the day after Astra announced it is to licence TC-5214, also used to treat MDD, developed by biopharmaceutical company Targacept.
