EAHP President Dr Roberto Frontini addressed a wide audience at the European Parliament this week on hospital pharmacy’s contribution to Active Ageing in the EU.
Speaking at an event on Tuesday 6 March hosted by the European Pharmaceutical Students Association (EPSA) to mark the European Year of Active and Healthy Ageing, Dr Frontini highlighted the importance of improving seamless care between health sectors in order to meet the challenges of an ageing population.
Dr Frontini also raised the need to better understand and share best practice in treating patients with dementia, and to continue to increase the “soft skills” of pharmacists in areas such as communication.
Discussion also turned to the need for common systems of recognition for the hospital pharmacy specialisation.
Other speakers at the event included Mario David MEP (Portugal, Vice-President of the European Peoples Party) who pointed out the need for Europe to become more successful in tackling lifestyle diseases and age-related diseases if the aim of increasing the measure of citizens’ active life years was to be achieved.
John Chave, General Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Group of the EU, identified 3 main challenges from ageing for pharmacists: polypharmacy, poor adherence and understanding adverse events in the elderly.
