The MHRA has issued a Medical Device Alert regarding ClearStar enteral feeding pumps (model M771), manufactured by Abbott Nutrition.
The manufacturer is aware of several reports worldwide of underdelivery of enteral feed, in some cases by more than 25%. The pump has a cassette for regulating flow, held in place by an adaptor bracket, but some pumps may underdeliver feed due to cracking of the bracket.
ClearStar pumps manufactured after 15 March 2004 have a new, strengthened bracket. Additionally, after 15 March 2004 authorised service centres began replacing the original brackets with new brackets when pumps were returned for service. Therefore, only certain serial numbers are affected; healthcare professionals can visit the Abbott Nutrition website at www.abbottnutritionuk.com to check if their pumps are affected.
