BIA welcomes UK Bioscience and Health Technology database report

The BioIndustry Association (BIA) welcomes the publication today by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and the Department of Health (DH) of the overview of the UK Bioscience and Health Technology database.

The database, which was commissioned by BIS, UKTI and DH following significant pressure from the BIA, covers the medical biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and medical technology sectors. The improved industry metrics will be used by Government to better inform policy and by UKTI as part of its Life Sciences Marketing Strategy. However, the BIA still hopes that Government will collate additional statistics on the financing of SMEs in the life sciences sector and on the product pipeline of companies.

Clive Dix, BIA Chairman, said: “The UK Bioscience and Health Technology database addresses the need for information about the UK’s life science capabilities within Government. The establishment of this database means there are no longer any excuses for Government not developing accurate policies for the life sciences sector.

The BIA has been highlighting the need for consistent industry data for a number of years and the creation of a database was one of the recommendations in the Bioscience Innovation and Growth Team Review and Refresh of Bioscience 2015.”
