Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease of unknown etiology. The disease is associated with heterogeneous manifestations and with episodes of disease flare and remission. The cause of SLE remains unknown but a number of factors are known to promote susceptibility to the disease. These include genetic, environmental and hormonal factors. The involvement of genetic factors is indicated by increased concordance rate of SLE in monozygotic twins (24
