Small and medium-sized European biotechnology and life-science enterprises have been invited to submit entries for a European award.
The European Biotechnica Award for innovation, worth EUR 100,000, has been presented to biotechnology and life-science companies by German trade-fair company Deutsche Messe AG and its partners each year since 2003.
Stephan Kühne of the Hannover-based company’s managing board explained that there was a cash prize of EUR 20,000 for the winner, with EUR 80,000 in non-cash prizes presented to the overall victor and the second- and third-placed entries.
The award ceremony would take place on 6 October at the official opening of the Biotechnica 2008 international biotechnology trade fair.
Mr Kühne said: “We want to support young European biotech companies that have developed pioneering products.
“The award offers them a superb opportunity to bring their highly promising developments to a wide audience.”
He said 2007 saw entries from 27 companies from five countries. The winner was the Renovo Group from Manchester, UK, and second and third place went to Danish companies Genmab and Bavarian Nordic.
The 11-strong panel of judges, with specialists from six countries, will be chaired by Professor Peter Stadler, CEO of Artemis Pharmaceuticals, Cologne.
The deadline for entries is 1 June 2008, and entry forms and details of conditions can be found on the website.
The award presentation will kick off the Biotechnica 2008 trade fair, which will be held at Hannover Exhibition Center on 7 to 9 October.
Mr Kühne said in 2007, 863 exhibitors from 32 nations showcased their products, developments and services to around 13,000 visitors.
