The Theriak Medicines Management system is scheduled to go live at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) early in 2012. This article describes why the system was selected, the preparation work that has been done to support the implementation and some of the anticipated benefits.

The need for e-prescribing

Electronic prescribing systems have enormous potential to improve medicines management processes. They can generate complete, legible prescriptions and improve the quality of prescribing through the use of decision support tools, thereby reducing the risk of medication errors.  In addition, they can be used to improve business processes and provide clinical data to support service development.

Overall, electronic prescribing can improve the safety and accuracy of prescribing and, when linked to electronic medicines administration and automated pharmacy systems, the benefits are compounded.
