The need for e-prescribing

Electronic prescribing systems have enormous potential to improve medicines management processes. They can generate complete, legible prescriptions and improve the quality of prescribing through the use of decision support tools, thereby reducing the risk of medication errors.  In addition, they can be used to improve business processes and provide clinical data to support service development.

Overall, electronic prescribing can improve the safety and accuracy of prescribing and, when linked to electronic medicines administration and automated pharmacy systems, the benefits are compounded.
