Herbal treatments for erectile dysfunction could cause serious adverse and life-threatening side effects, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has warned.
The Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products in Belgium, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provided the MHRA with test results warning that remedies acquired over the internet contained the prescription-only medicine sildenafil, which can lead to escalated blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes.
The marketed ‘herbal’ remedies include ‘Africa Black Ant’, ‘Rock Hard Weekend’, ‘Pandora’ and ‘The Best’. “Historically, with unlicensed herbal medicines, people have needed to be aware that the standards could vary widely and sometimes be poor.” Said Richard Woodfield, MHRA Head of Herbal Policy.
“However, an increasing range of herbal medicines made to assured standards are now available on the UK market thanks to the Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) scheme.”
