A microbiology research, development and manufacturing centre has been opened in a £5 million project by a life sciences firm.

Trek Diagnostic Systems, which makes MRSA prevention products, will use the facility in West Sussex to create more of their products, which identify which drugs are needed to treat yeast and bacterial infections.

Growing demand for their items has led the firm’s American owners to replace their original East Grinstead facility.

Trade minister Lord Davies said: “The UK not only has the largest life sciences industry in Europe, it is also the number one location in Europe for research and development.

“I warmly welcome Magellan Biosciences’ decision to expand its operations in the UK and look forward to hearing more about its successes.’

South East Regional Minister Jonathan Shaw added: “This significant £5 million investment is good news for the region. It is particularly good news to see inward investment during a period of recession and is a demonstration of confidence in our workforce. This follows other recent investments here in high-tech, high value sectors where we excel.”
