One dose of vaccine prevents H1N1

Only one dose of swine flu vaccines is needed to protect people from the virus, US health officials have confirmed.

Trials of Sanofi- Pasteur SA’s and CSL Ltd’s H1N1 vaccines have backed up the companies’ claim that further dosage was unnecessary.

Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said that people appear to be protected eight days after being vaccinated.

“I am very pleased today to be able to tell you that the initial results from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored trial corroborate and reinforce the findings from the companies,” Dr Fauci said.

According to Fauci, the vaccine trails had only shown a few minor side effects so far. The confirmation comes after CSL reported that other trials showed just a single dose of vaccine was needed and Novartis AG and China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd claimed one dose of their vaccines was enough to protect people.
