Speaking at Hospital Pharmacy Europe’s Virtual Study Day on IV medicines safety in a session sponsored by Baxter for UK healthcare professionals only, Alistair Gray brought delegates up to speed on recent insights from a fluid stewardship programme implemented at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. Here, you have exclusive access to the session recording.
Optimising fluid management requires a comprehensive multidisciplinary effort, which Alistair Gray, chief pharmacy information officer at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, knows all too well.
While an accepted definition of fluid stewardship’s primary goal is ‘to optimise clinical outcomes while minimising unintended consequences of intravenous fluid administration’, Alistair says it’s actually ‘so much more than that’.
In 2019, he was instrumental in the conception and implementation of a holistic and multifaceted fluid stewardship programme at Royal Blackburn Hospital, which, as he puts it, focused on ‘turning NICE Clinical Guidance 174 into a reality’.
Six years on, and with multiple audits and upgrades under their belt, Alistair shares the very latest insights, including 2025 audit data and analysis, in this session sponsored by Baxter Healthcare UK Ltd for UK healthcare professionals only.
He discusses the aims of the fluid stewardship group and its 10-point plan, incorporating the Five Rs of IV fluid prescribing into routine care, how the move from paper to electronic prescriptions changed the programme, the quality improvement projects currently underway and what’s on the horizon – including a taster of a fluid prescribing app in development.
The session begins with a brief introduction from event chair Reena Mehta, consultant pharmacist in critical care at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and chair of the Intensive Care Society’s Learning Division.
