Codonics has announced that its Safe Label System won a category at the 2014 Medical Design Excellence Awards.
The Codonics Safe Label System (SLS), a medication management safety solution, greatly reduces preventable medication errors in surgical and procedural patient care areas (such as the operating room) or anywhere medications are prepared.
A US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved Class 2 medical device, SLS uses barcode technology and a sophisticated, comprehensive database to identify drugs on demand during preparation and administration, responding with visual and audible prompts and multiple safety checks to remove the element of human error. As a final output, SLS provides compliant, full-colour medication labels complete with 1D and 2D content that enables barcode point-of-care (BPOC) confirmation when integrated with anaesthesia information management systems (AIMS) and electronic medical records (EMR).
Without disruption of a typically hectic workflow, SLS significantly improves medication safety and ensures compliance with best practices and standards to improve patient safety, efficiency and accuracy.
Codonics worked closely with Sims Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, a specialty hospital of Partners HealthCare, during the initial concept of the system.
MDEA is the medtech industry’s premier design competition committed to searching worldwide for the highest-calibre finished medical devices, products, systems or packaging available on the market. The awards programme celebrates the achievements of the medical device manufacturers, their suppliers and the many people behind the scenes – engineers, scientists, designers and clinicians – who are responsible for the cutting-edge products that are saving lives, improving patient healthcare and transforming medtech.
“We are greatly honored to be selected as an MDEA Winner. Opportunities for this type of highly regarded award based on peer selection of exceptional product innovation makes our team especially proud,” said Peter O. Botten, Codonics President and CEO. “This award is a testament to the skill, dedication and innovation of our design and engineering teams. The MDEA achievement recognizes and validates the need for SLS and improved medication safety worldwide.”
Entries are judged by an impartial panel of medtech experts. Unlike other design competitions that are merely styling contests, the MDEA jury comprises practising doctors, nurses and technicians alongside industrial designers, engineers, manufacturers and human factors experts.
MDEA jurors comprehensively review entries based on the following criteria: the ability of the product-development team to overcome all challenges so the product meets its clinical objectives; innovative use of materials, components, and processes; user-related functions improving healthcare delivery and changing traditional medical attitudes or practices; features providing enhanced benefits to the patient and end-user in relation to clinical efficacy; manufacturing cost-effectiveness and profitability; and healthcare system benefits, such as improved accessibility, efficacy or safety, in addition to providingattention to a critical unmet clinical need.
The 2014 MDEA Juror Panel selected 33 winning products from among 54 exceptional finalist products in 11 medical technology product categories. Selected products excel in five areas: manufacturing and technological innovation; design and engineering advancements; patient benefits; business benefits; and overall improvement to healthcare industry.
“Having SLS recognized for its innovation by MDEA is a great honor,” said Cristy Berg, Vice President of Communications. “Being selected as a winner is an acknowledgement by the MDEA judges that SLS technology is truly changing the face of healthcare. We are extremely proud to be part of the elite group of breakthrough medical technology companies recognized by MDEA.”
The 2014 MDEA-winning products were announced in New York on 11 June during the 17th Annual MDEA Ceremony held in conjunction with MD&M East, the largest MedTech event on the East Coast of the United States.
