Two sacked over infection outbreak

It has emerged that two healthcare assistants have been sacked from an NHS trust at the centre of a deadly outbreak of Clostridium difficile.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust also confirmed that a staff nurse and another healthcare assistant have also been disciplined, but will retain their jobs.

The sanctions follow a damning Healthcare Commission report which showed that numerous errors allowed C difficile to thrive in hospitals under the trust’s management.

The police and health and safety officials are continuing to carry out investigations into patient care at the trust.

The two dismissed members of staff worked at Maidstone Hospital, while the others are employed at the Kent and Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells.

Trust acting chief executive Glenn Douglas said: “We are acting firmly to give a clear message to any member of staff behaving inappropriately.”

The trust also confirmed that three non-executive directors have resigned from the board.

Bruce Sheppy, Gina Jennings and Simon Ingham, have all quit with immediate effect, while another two non-executive directors, Aaron Cockell and Jonathan Paine, will leave at the end of the month.
