UK may stem medicine exports

A pharmacy organisation in the UK believes itsgovernment should consider an exemption in EU law that allows the prohibitionof free movement of goods if it threatens public health.

The All-Party Pharmacy Group report suggeststhat, although EU law allows free, cross-border movement of goods within theEU, specific goods can be banned if this would endangers health. The reportstates: “We believe the Government needs to consider the use of this exemptionin the best interests of UK patients.”

It expands on this with: “The Government must seewhat can be learned from the French Governmnet’s recent proposal that measuresbe introduced to effectively curtail the expert of medicines.”

The UK was a significant importer of medicines before2008 when shifts in exchange rates meant that it was less expensive for the UKto buy prescription medicines within its borders and export from the UK rose.
