The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has appointed its first president since the professional body’s structural changes.
Merseyside-based pharmacist Martin Asbury has been elected as the organisation’s president after it was changed to be “a membership body entirely focused on driving excellence in pharmacy”.
The 42-year-old, who practices at WM Morrisons in West Kirby, Wirral, will play an integral part of the organisation’s strategic leadership after winning the post.
Mr Asbury, from Chester, was one of the first pharmacists to work closely with drug addicts, providing methadone to those on a pharmacy treatment programme.
He was also at the forefront of pharmacists allowed to prescribe nicotine treatments for the NHS.
Mr Asbury said: “Pharmacists are the leaders of pharmaceutical innovation, research and development of medicines.
“We are entrusted by our patients to take care of their every pharmaceutical need maximising the benefits of their medicines, with many pharmacists now offering additional services such a stop smoking and weight management.
“I am delighted and honoured to have been elected by my fellow pharmacists to take forward the profession for the benefit of patients.”
