Atrial fibrillation is currently the focus of a national quality, innovation, productivity and prevention programme in the UK.
The programme aims to improve quality outcomes for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and reduce health and social care costs by reducing the risk of stroke through service developments to improve detection, diagnosis and management in primary care. This includes promoting the importance of stroke risk assessment for all patients with AF and the initiation of oral anticoagulant therapy in appropriate patients.
At least two new oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are expected to be licensed for stroke prevention in AF during 2011/12
